Artist Statement

“ My work is inspired by my personal experiences. The themes that are most central to my work are reproductive rights, black motherhood, race, black beauty and identity. Focusing on these topics allows me to keep them in constant conversation. I use deep colors and  striking compositions to highlight certain aspects of my work because it provides a needed depth. For example, when making abstract work,  I tend to use broad, biomorphic shapes that can be seen as depictions of black femininity, racial dynamics, and states of mind. When it comes to making representational pieces, there is a black surrealism that comes into play. By using preconceived notions of black archetypes and turning them on their head, these types of paintings add to the ongoing conversation around representation. Both of these genres drive my main ideas forward. As a society, we are often scared to voice our opinions because of how it may effect someone else. Due to this fact, my work makes the conscious decision to spread awareness and form discussions. “
